Latest Reviews of We'll Be Together Again

We’ll Be Together Again; Rob Parton Big Band.
Of course New York has the highest profile in nearly anything artsy, but after listening to this recording, I’d bet that Chicago is simply oozing with top o’ the mountain jazz players. Leader Rob Parton, a windy city fixture, has assembled some blistering soloists playing edgy, challenging charts, including Clark Terry’s “Serenade to a Bus Seat”; Joe Henderson’s “Tetragon”; Miles Davis’s “Blue In Green”; Monk’s “Ugly Beauty”; and a host of standards. An extra treat is Parton’s three-part “Fantasy for Trumpet and Jazz Orchestra.” Lots of goodies here.

We'll Be Together Again / ROB PARTON BIG BAND [海外盤]   This new album of big band is led by Chicago based trumpeter, Rob Parton.  He gathered all skillful musicians who might be unknown in Japan, but play standards and some original pieces in the album. Because the leader is a trumpeter, the brass section is solid.  In the first tune "Serenade to a Bus Seat", the band plays reminiscent of Maynard Ferguson's color combined with powerful playing by Rob.  In the title song "We'll Be Together Again", I can hear such an expressive and lyrical flugelhorn solo over the background of a sturdy ensemble. The highlight of the album is the Eric Richard composition, "Fantasy for Trumpet and Jazz Orchestra" Suite.  In "I. Gold", Rob plays a melodious solo which made full use of high notes over a brilliant ensemble.  In "II. Copper ", in contrast, Rob plays a beautiful flugelhorn solo over the background of a romantic ensemble, reminiscent of Gil Evans.  In "III. Silver", in addition to Rob, trumpeters BJ Cord and Victor Garcia play in a gorgeous chase which is overwhelming (meant in a good way).  Also, the band played brilliantly in the rich, undulating arrangement of Miles's "Blue in Green". A masterpiece.  ~Shigeyo Hyodo/JazzPage

We'll Be Together Again / ROB PARTON BIG BAND [
アルバムのハイライトは、エリック・リチャードが作曲した組曲<Fantasy for Trumpet and Jazz Orchestra>で”I.

Big Band--well, it's very well played and nicely arranged.  I'll bet they look great on the band stand.  Lots of déjà vu, which is hard to avoid with big bands. The surprise for me is the very interesting and compelling arrangement by Joe Policastro--a refreshing and infectiously unexpected take on Monk. Colby and Miller glow with restrained intensity.  ~Don Seybold WBAA Purdue University
